Aspen is a city located in Pitkin County in Colorado. Aspen is known worldwide as one of the most popular ski destinations and a year round city with the 2004 population estimate at 6,368. The city of Aspen has transformed itself from a mining community into an international playing field for the rich and famous. Famous song-writer, John Denver lived in Aspen for most of his life.

Geography

Aspen is a mountain town sitting 8000 feet above sea level and is located along the southeast end of Roaring Fork Valley along the Roaring Fork River. Red Mountain is to the North of Aspen, the Aspen Moutains are to the south of the city and Smuggler Mountain is to the east. Maroon Creek, Hunter Creek and Castle Creek Valleys are within a small distance from Aspen. Denver is approximately a 3 1/2 hour drive eastward of Aspen.

Aspen is known for lots of snow to accompany the incredible skiing, but the others seasons of the year are also very beautiful. July is the warmest month in Aspen with daily highs averaging 77 degrees F and lows dipping into the high 40 degrees F range. The lowest temperture was -25 degrees F recorded back in 1989. March in Aspen is known for the most precipitation with 2.74 inches.
